Our playground magnets will rekindle fond memories for those of us who grew up in Singapore between the 70’s and 80’s. Back then playgrounds featured a local identity with designs ranging from dragons to bumboats. They were designed by the Housing & Development Board (HDB) and constructed of concrete. To reduce the maintenance costs of repainting, mosaic tiles were used which lent a unique aesthetic to these now iconic playground structures. Few still stand today with most demolished to make way for generic plastic playgrounds. While these new playgrounds are safer, most will agree that they lack the character of our dearly missed playgrounds of yore.
