Singapore’s national icon, the Merlion, is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. The body represents the island’s humble beginnings as a fishing village when it was called Temasek which translates to ‘sea town’ in Old Javanese. Its head is inspired by Singapore’s original name, Singapura, or ‘lion city’ in Malay.
